How Does Surface Finish Affect Solder Paste Performance?

Technical Library | 2021-07-06 21:13:36.0

The surface finishes commonly used on printed circuit boards (PCBs) have an effect on solder paste performance in the surface mount process. Some surface finishes are non-planar like hot air solder level (HASL) which can lead to inconsistencies in solder paste printing. Other surface finishes are difficult to wet during reflow like organic solderability preservative (OSP). What is the overall effect of surface finish on solder paste performance? Which solder paste is best for each surface finish? It is the goal of this paper to answer these questions.

Conductive Adhesives Increase Microchip Packaging Density

Technical Library | 2010-06-24 21:20:05.0

Cost-effective assembly of custom-designed microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) for medium-caliber fuzes is challenging. In particular, the environment must have a setback acceleration exceeding 60,000g and centripetal acceleration of 9000g/mm out of center in a 30mm#2;173 projectile. In addition, the space available is very limited. The traditional approach is to mount the MEMS chip in a package that is then soldered to the printed circuit board (PCB). However, by mounting the MEMS chip directly to the PCB using conductive adhesive, we can increase the packaging density while reducing manufacturing cost.

PTH Core-to-Core Interconnect Using Sintered Conductive Pastes

Technical Library | 2013-03-07 18:25:36.0

The market for high-layer-count printed circuit boards (PCB) containing blind and buried vias was once relatively small, and focused on specialized applications in the military and high end computing. The demand for these types of PCBs today is being driven by an increasing number of commercial applications in the telecommunications and semiconductor test market segments. These applications typically require high-aspect-ratio plated-through-holes (PTHs) and blind and buried vias in order to meet the applications interconnect density requirements. Blind and buried vias and high aspect ratio PTHs continue to present manufacturing challenges and frequently are the limiting features to achieving high fabrication yield... A Review of Corrosion and Environmental Effects on Electronics

Technical Library | 2013-08-01 13:17:44.0

Electronic industry uses a number of metallic materials in various forms. Also new materials and technology are introduced all the time for increased performance. In recent years, corrosion of electronic systems has been a significant issue. Multiplicity of materials used is one reason limiting the corrosion reliability. However, the reduced spacing between components on a printed circuit board (PCB) due to miniaturization of device is another factor that has made easy for interaction of components in corrosive environments. Presently the knowledge on corrosion issues of electronics is very limited. This paper reviews briefly the materials used in electronic systems, factors influencing corrosion, types of corrosion observed in electronics, and testing methods.

Automatic PCB Defect Detection Using Image Substraction Method

Technical Library | 2013-08-08 15:23:11.0

In this project Machine Vision PCB Inspection System is applied at the first step of manufacturing, i.e., the making of bare PCB. We first compare a PCB standard image with a PCB image, using a simple subtraction algorithm that can highlight the main problem-regions. We have also seen the effect of noise in a PCB image that at what level this method is suitable to detect the faulty image. Our focus is to detect defects on printed circuit boards & to see the effect of noise. Typical defects that can be detected are over etchings (opens), under-etchings (shorts), holes etc...

Whisker Growth In Tin Alloys On Glass-Epoxy Laminate Studied By Scanning ION Microscopy and Energy-Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy

Technical Library | 2013-08-22 14:28:58.0

Tin-rich solders are widely applied in the electronic industry in the majority of modern printed circuit boards (PCBs). Because the use of lead-tin solders has been banned in the European Union since 2006, the problem of the bridging of adjacent conductors due to tin whisker growth (limited before by the addition of Pb) has been reborn. In this study tin alloys soldered on glass-epoxy laminate (typically used for PCBs) are considered. Scanning ion microscopy with Focused Ion Beam (FIB) system and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDXS) were used to determine correlations between spatial non-uniformities of the glass-epoxy laminate, the distribution of intermetallic compounds and whisker growth.

Printing of Solder Paste - A Quality Assurance Methodology

Technical Library | 2015-10-01 16:12:51.0

Solder paste printing is known to be one of the most difficult processes to quality assure in electronic manufacturing. The challenge increases as the technology development moves toward a mix between large modules and small chip components on large and densely populated printed circuit boards. Having a process for quality assurance of the solder paste print is fast becoming a necessity. This article describes a method to ensure quality secured data from both solder paste printers and inspection machines in electronic assembly manufacturing. This information should be used as feedback in order to improve the solder paste printing process.

PCB Fabrication Processes and Their Effects on Fine Copper Barrel Cracks

Technical Library | 2015-12-23 16:57:27.0

The onset of copper barrel cracks is typically induced by the presence of manufacturing defects. In the absence of discernible manufacturing defects, the causes of copper barrel cracks in printed circuit board (PCB) plated through holes is not well understood. Accordingly, there is a need to determine what affects the onset of barrel cracks and then control those causes to mitigate their initiation. The objective of this research is to conduct a design of experiment (DOE) to determine if there is a relationship between PCB fabrication processes and the prevalence of fine barrel cracks. The test vehicle used will be a 16-layer epoxy-based PCB that has two different sized plated through holes as well as buried vias.

Round Robin of High Frequency Test Methods by IPC-D24C Task Group

Technical Library | 2017-06-29 16:39:30.0

Currently there is no industry standard test method for measuring dielectric properties of circuit board materials at frequencies greater than about 10 GHz. Various materials vendors and test labs take different approaches to determine these properties. It is common for these different approaches to yield varying values of key properties like permittivity and loss tangent. The D-24C Task Group of IPC has developed this round robin program to assess these various methods from the "bottom up" to determine if standardized methods can be agreed upon to provide the industry with more accurate and valid characteristics of dielectrics used in high-frequency and high-speed applications.

An Investigation into the Use of Nano-Coated Stencils to Improve Solder Paste Printing with Small Stencil Aperture Area Ratios

Technical Library | 2017-09-28 16:36:33.0

These nano-coatings also refine the solder paste brick shape giving improved print definition. These two benefits combine to help the solder paste printing process produce an adequate amount of solder paste in the correct position on the circuit board pads. Today, stencil aperture area ratios from 0.66 down to 0.40 are commonly used and make paste printing a challenge. This paper presents data on small area ratio printing for component designs including 01005 Imperial (0402 metric) and smaller 03015 metric and 0201 metric chip components and 0.3 mm and 0.4 mm pitch micro BGAs.
