The perennial question in electronics design and manufacture is: "How do I design a printed circuit board (PCB) so that it can be properly tested?" To achieve this objective, there are a number of design-for-test (DFT) considerations and techniques. Some are major, others, minor. However, the total contributes to a highly effective PCB design so that testing procedures applied to a given design result in high 90 percent plus test coverage.

In electronics design, Computer Aided Design (CAD) tools manage part data in a logical schematic view (a part symbol) and a physical PCB view (a part footprint). Yet, a part has a third view, which CAD tools ignore – its supply data (Manufacturer part num

Many Original Equipment Manufacturers, (OEM’s), struggle to continue shipping aging or obsolete electronic products. Electronic products designed five to ten years ago are still relevant in the marketplace. Often these venerable old products have gained particular acceptance amongst a select group of customers. In many cases these old products fulfill a need in a unique manner. Examples include: designs that are grandfathered into an application due to regulatory considerations; designs having unique form-fit-and-function; designs running special software ; designs subject to contractual support and service requirements; designs in which a new contract stipulates delivery of older gear as part of a larger system offering. Any one or all of these reasons can lead an OEM to continue the production of electronic equipment well into its end of useful component life

Much like actual cities where streets and roads connect buildings together, ICs on a board are connected to each other with copper traces. And just like any metropolitan city, urban expansion tends to move vertically instead of horizontally, but instead of multi-story buildings, we get multilayer boards. Vias are copper-plated holes spanning through the different layers of a given board or panel. They are the entrance locations to the subway stations, if you will. Having those multilayer boards has enabled electronic design to minimize the size of boards immensely without compromising on the complexity.

The paper will discuss the integration of 3D printing and inkjet printing fabrication technologies for microwave and millimeter-wave applications. With the recent advancements in 3D and inkjet printing technology, achieving resolution down to 50 um, it is feasible to fabricate electronic components and antennas operating in the millimeter-wave regime. The nature of additive manufacturing allows designers to create custom components and devices for specialized applications and provides an excellent and inexpensive way of prototyping electronic designs. The combination of multiple printable materials enables the vertical integration of conductive, dielectric, and semi-conductive materials which are the fundamental components of passive and active circuit elements such as inductors, capacitors, diodes, and transistors. Also, the on-demand manner of printing can eliminate the use of subtractive fabrication processes, which are necessary for conventional microfabrication processes such as photolithography, and drastically reduce the cost and material waste of fabrication.
