In one of our Consumer Electronics projects, a leader of networking technologies requested to test dispensing performance of a thermally conductive material, Fujipoly Sarcon SPG-50A. This material improves heat dissipation for higher frequency applications and reduces the negative effects of thermal resistance under heat, cold, humid, and thermal shock conditions. The customer's goal was to dispense a 1mm diameter dot with acceptable speed and consistency.

A repeat customer specializing in high-technology interconnect, sensor, and antenna solutions, partnered with us to dispense small volumes of solder paste (Indium 10.1 SAC305 T6SG 78%m) onto backplane connectors – gold pads 0.175mm x 0.225mm. EFD Inc. and Leister USA have collaborated to bust the myth that you cannot perform laser reflow with solder paste. Using Leister diode lasers, EFD has formulated solder pastes that survive the rapid reflow cycle typical of laser heating. These solder pastes reflow and wet well, without spatter, even when heating is accomplished in less than half a second. The flux core in wire solders cannot boast such flux spatter resistance in such an aggressive heating environment.

A new process has been developed for RF shielding on compact electronic communications devices using automated solder paste dispensing. The process is known as Shield Edge Interconnect (SEI). SEI designs enable parts to be processed though underfill before placing of the RF shield and allows more complete use of valuable PCB real estate to achieve reduced form factor requirements and/or for added components on products such as smartphones and tablets. The reduced form factor creates challenges for the assembly of those devices. This process, enabled by Speedline dispensing technology, relies on extremely accurate dispensing of solder paste on copper traces located along the outer edge of the PCB. The result is a robust process solution for SEI in which proprietary closed loop dispenser, pump, vision, and software technologies enable a high volume manufacturing (HVM) process.
