Hand Printing using Nanocoated and other High End Stencil Materials

Technical Library | 2019-05-29 23:10:30.0

There are times when a PCB prototype needs to be built quickly to test out a design. In such cases where it is known early on that there will be multiple iterations or that a "one and done" assembly will be made that there will be some SMT assemblers who choose to hand print solder paste onto the board using a "frameless" stencil. In such cases where hand printing is used, the consistency of the printing technique has typically been in question. Furthermore, the effectiveness of both the nanocoatings as well as the higher end stainless steel materials, which have been heretofore studied in controlled printing environments, will be evaluated for their impact on the hand printing process. The purpose of the study was to determine the effectiveness of select nanocoating materials as well as certain high end stainless steel stencil materials as they relate to the manual SMT printing process. A variety of nanocoatings were applied to SMT metal stencils and solder paste volume measurements were taken to compare the effectiveness.

BGA Thermal Shock Testing

Technical Library | 2007-02-01 09:27:47.0

The purpose of the testing was to compare the resistance and check for open circuit conditions of reworked BGA test samples made with and without StencilQuik™ after 500 thermal shock cycles. StencilQuick™ is a product of Best Inc. In this series of tests, the resistance of daisy chain resistance patterns running between the BGA and test board after exposure to thermal shock was measured.

Electroformed vs. Laser-cut: A Stencil Performance Study

Technical Library | 2013-01-11 16:51:33.0

There have been claims in the industry that laser-cut electroformed nickel foil blanks provide stencil print performance comparable to electroformed stencils. A study was established to measure the quantitative differences in performance between the two during an independent lab study.

Stencil Printing of Small Apertures

Technical Library | 2012-10-25 16:34:02.0

First published in the 2012 IPC APEX EXPO technical conference proceedings. This paper will examine stencil technologies (including Laser and Electroform), Aperture Wall coatings (including Nickel-Teflon coatings and Nano-coatings), and how these parameters influence paste transfer for miniature devices with Area Ratios less than the standard recommended lower limit of .5. A matrix of print tests will be utilized to compare paste transfer and measure the effectiveness of the different stencil configurations. Area Ratios ranging from .32 to .68 will be investigated.

The Effect of Higher Stencil Tension on Printing Performance

Technical Library | 2023-06-12 19:07:04.0

In this article we will examine if there is a measurable difference in the printing performance when using stencils which have a higher tension than is commonly accepted in the industry. Alpha's new tensoRED™ High Tension Frame System will be introduced during this wider examination. We will examine their effect in terms of controlling variation in critical deposit volumes and what, if any effect on positional accuracy can be seen.

Effects of Assebly Process Variables on Voiding at a Thermal Interface.

Technical Library | 2007-04-04 11:43:41.0

The present work offers a discussion and a first case study to identify and illustrate voiding mechanisms for a particular TIM between a heat spreader and the back of a flip chip. Pronounced differences were observed between stencil printing and dispensing in terms of initial void formation, apparently related to the specific properties of the material. Measurements of the effects of heat ramp rate and peak temperature showed the subsequent evolution and final void size distribution to be determined by the initial part of the cure profile up to the material gelling temperature.

Size Matters - The Effects of Solder Powder Size on Solder Paste Performance

Technical Library | 2020-10-27 02:02:17.0

Solder powder size is a popular topic in the electronics industry due to the continuing trend of miniaturization of electronics. The question commonly asked is "when should we switch from Type 3 to a smaller solder powder?" Solder powder size is usually chosen based on the printing requirements for the solder paste. It is common practice to use IPC Type 4 or 5 solder powders for stencil designs that include area ratios below the recommended IPC limit of 0.66. The effects of solder powder size on printability of solder paste have been well documented. The size of the solder powder affects the performance of the solder paste in other ways. Shelf life, stencil life, reflow performance, voiding behavior, and reactivity / stability are all affected by solder powder size. Testing was conducted to measure each of these solder paste performance attributes for IPC Type 3, Type 4, Type 5 and Type 6 SAC305 solder powders in both water soluble and no clean solder pastes. The performance data for each size of solder powder in each solder paste flux was quantified and summarized. Guidance for choosing the optimal size of solder powder is given based on the results of this study.

Factors That Influence Side-Wetting Performance on IC Terminals

Technical Library | 2023-08-04 15:27:30.0

A designed experiment evaluated the influence of several variables on appearance and strength of Pb-free solder joints. Components, with leads finished with nickel-palladium-gold (NiPdAu), were used from Texas Instruments (TI) and two other integrated circuit suppliers. Pb-free solder paste used was tin-silver-copper (SnAgCu) alloy. Variables were printed wiring board (PWB) pad size/stencil aperture (the pad finish was consistent; electrolysis Ni/immersion Au), reflow atmosphere, reflow temperature, Pd thickness in the NiPdAu finish, and thermal aging. Height of solder wetting to component lead sides was measured for both ceramic plate and PWB soldering. A third response was solder joint strength; a "lead pull" test determined the maximum force needed to pull the component lead from the PWB. This paper presents a statistical analysis of the designed experiment. Reflow atmosphere and pad size/stencil aperture have the greatest contribution to the height of lead side wetting. Reflow temperature, palladium thickness, and preconditioning had very little impact on side-wetting height. For lead pull, variance in the data was relatively small and the factors tested had little impact.

RULES FOR WORKING WITH 0201s AND OTHER SMALL PARTS

Technical Library | 2023-05-02 18:50:24.0

Surface-mount PCB components are smaller than their lead-based counterparts and provide a radically higher component density. They are available in a variety of shapes and sizes designated by a series of standardized codes curated by the electronics industry. Of these PCB components, the 0201-sized are the smallest, measuring 0.024 x 0.012 in. (0.6 x 0.3 mm) – that's 70% smaller than the previous 0402 level! The 0201 components are designed to improve reliability in space-constrained applications such as portable electronics like smartphones, tablets, robotics and digital cameras, but require delicate handling during the assembly process. Given the miniaturized dimensions of an 0201 package, it is crucial that the mounting process abide by a series of guidelines regarding the design of the PCB mounting pads and solderable metallization, PCB circuit trace width, solder paste selection, package placement and overages, solder paste reflow, solder stencil screening, and final inspection. It's advisable that one review this information when procuring the services of a PCB assembler.
