The Greening of the Reflow Process

Technical Library | 2023-01-17 17:35:07.0

After years of concentration on resolving productivity- related concerns such as increasing speed, consistency and throughput while reducing costs, many of the world's leading electronics manufacturers have added a new mandate to their agendas. They are seeking to minimize the environmental impacts of their assembly processes and final products without sacrificing the high levels of productivity and quality that have been achieved through decades of effort.

IPC-CC-830B Versus the 'Real World'

Technical Library | 2016-09-22 17:52:59.0

Conformal Coatings are often used to increase the reliability of electronic assemblies operating in harsh or corrosive environments where the product would otherwise fail prematurely. Conformal coatings are often qualified to international standards, intended to enable users to better differentiate between suitable conformal coating chemistries, but always on a flat test coupon, which is not representative of real world use conditions. In order to better correlate international standards with real world-use conditions, three-dimensional Surface Insulation Resistance (SIR) test boards have been manufactured with dummy components representative of those commonly used on printed circuit assemblies...

Counterfeit Electronic Components: Understanding the Risk

Technical Library | 2012-03-08 20:08:57.0

You may have heard talk in the news lately regarding counterfeit electronic components making it into the US military supply chain. The U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC) recently reported in the Counterfeit Electronic Parts in the Defense Department Supply Chain hearing held on November 17, 2011, 1,800 cases of suspected counterfeit components that went into more than 1 million individual products. If you consider this number for the military, we can only imagine the number of counterfeits in our commercial yet high reliability products, such as life support or other critical systems. If you are the person within your electronics-based company who must perform risk analyses, counterfeiting is not a new concern, yet many do not realize just how good counterfeiters have become at their "trade".

Influence of Flexibility of the Interconnects on the Dynamic Bending Reliability of Flexible Hybrid Electronics

Technical Library | 2021-08-18 01:27:15.0

The growing interest towards thinner and conformable electronic systems has attracted significant attention towards flexible hybrid electronics (FHE). Thin chip-foil packages fabricated by integrating ultra-thin monocrystalline silicon integrated circuits (ICs) on/in flexible foils have the potential to deliver high performance electrical functionalities at very low power requirements while being mechanically flexible.

The Long-term Shaping of the JTAG/Boundary-scan Standards

Technical Library | 2015-05-11 21:27:52.0

Originating from the last millenium, almost three decades ago, the introduction of surface mount packaging triggered a wave of changes throughout many aspects of electronics production. A small number of talented, innovative test engineers from various big players of the industry started to attend meetings to discuss the impact of that change of technology on their future test concepts for modern assemblies. The Joint Test Action Group was born.

Non-Contact Streaming Technology Enhances the Dispense Process

Technical Library | 2009-09-16 15:13:58.0

The dispensing industry within electronics manufacturing represents a very diverse marketplace indeed; many different materials can be applied in many different ways. One high-growth area in this market is underfill, driven by the explosive demand for hand-held devices (HHDs). This segment is comprised of popular consumer goods, such as cell phones, mp3 players, GPS navigators, PDAs, portable games and ultra-mobile PCs. A new, non-contact dispense technology, known as Streaming, has recently been introduced to specifically address the incumbent needs associated with underfill.

Component Obsolescence Still Driving the Counterfeit Market

Technical Library | 2013-04-12 07:31:31.0

As change is inevitable, therefore so is obsolescence. In the electronics sector, stocks of components used in subassemblies will eventually run out, no surprise there! However on many occasions, particularly in the often long product life cycles associated with the traditional UK OEM’s in the industrial, military and medical sectors, to name but three, component supply gets ‘difficult’ long before the customers products themselves reach their ‘end of life’. Component manufacturers work to a commercial agenda; when the popularity of a specific device wanes, or indeed when new features are demanded by the market, they will cease production and redeploy their manufacturing capacity to devices that are being demanded by their high volume customers; the global players.

Dispelling the Black Magic of Solder Paste

Technical Library | 2016-01-21 16:52:27.0

Solder paste has long been viewed as "black magic". This "black magic" can easily be dispelled through a solder paste evaluation. Unfortunately, solder paste evaluation can be a challenge for electronic assemblers. Interrupting the production schedule to perform an evaluation is usually the first hurdle. Choosing the solder paste properties to test is simple, but testing for these properties can be difficult. Special equipment or materials may be required depending upon the tests that are chosen. Once the testing is complete, how does one make the decision to choose a solder paste? Is the decision based on gut feel or hard data? This paper presents a process for evaluating solder pastes using a variety of methods. These methods are quick to run and are challenging, revealing the strengths and weaknesses of solder pastes. Methods detailed in this paper include: print volume, stencil life, response to pause, open time, tack force over time, wetting, solder balling, graping, voiding, accelerated aging, and others.
