Effect of Silver in Common Lead-Free Alloys

Technical Library | 2023-01-02 17:50:34.0

Silver bearing alloys have been used in electronics soldering for many years. Silver has been used in tin-lead solders (Sn62Pb36Ag2) to combat silver scavenging from silver plated electronic components as well as to improve thermal fatigue resistance. Many of the common lead-free alloys contain some amount of silver. Silver bearing alloys have good electrical and thermal conductivity as well as the ability to wet to the common surface finishes used in printed wiring assemblies, thus giving it all the attributes needed for an electronic solder alloy. Presence of silver in Sn based solders increases the bulk solder modulus and is generally believed to improve resistance to fatigue from thermal cycles. Increased solder modulus can be advantageous or disadvantageous depending on the desired performance attribute. For example in high strain rate situations, higher modulus of the bulk solders results in lower life time. A wide variety of leaded and lead-free

Cleaning PCBs in Electronics: Understanding Today's Needs

Technical Library | 2022-02-16 15:34:32.0

Because of the phase-out of CFCs and HCFCs, standard solder pastes and fluxes evolved from RA and RMA fluxes to No-Clean, to low residue No-Clean, to very low residue No-Clean. Many companies came out with their cleaning solutions, aqueous and semi-aqueous, with each product release being more innovative than the previous one. Unfortunately for most of the suppliers of cleaners, two other trends appeared; lead-free soldering and the progressive miniaturization of electronic devices

Soldering of SMD Film Capacitors in Practical Lead Free Processes

Technical Library | 2009-06-02 23:53:18.0

Today the lead free soldering process is a must in commercial electronics and it is also coming more and more important in automative and industrial electronics sectors in the near future. The most common choices for lead free solders are different Tin-Solder-Copper (SAC) alloys. Processes using SAC solders cause extra stress, because of increased process temperatures, especially to the plastic materials.

Inclusion Voiding in Gull Wing Solder Joints

Technical Library | 2012-08-30 21:24:29.0

This paper provides definitions of the different voiding types encountered in Gull Wing solder joint geometries. It further provides corresponding reliability data that support some level of inclusion voiding in these solder joints and identifies the final criteria being applied for certain IBM Server applications. Such acceptance criteria can be applied using various available x-ray inspection techniques on a production or sample basis. The bulk of supporting data to date has been gathered through RoHS server exempt SnPb eutectic soldering operations but it is expected to provide a reasonable baseline for pending Pb-free solder applications.

Strength of Lead-free BGA Spheres in High Speed Loading

Technical Library | 2008-04-08 17:42:27.0

Concern about the failure of lead-free BGA packages when portable devices such as cell phones are accidentally dropped and a general concern about the resistance of these packages under shock loading has prompted an interest in the impact strength of the soldered BGA connection. This paper reports the results of the measurement of the impact strength of lead-free 0.5±0.01mm diameter BGA spheres on 0.42mm solder mask defined pads on copper/OSP and ENIG substrates using recently developed equipment that can load individual BGA spheres at high strain rates in shear and tension.

iNEMI HFR-Free PCB Materials Team Project: An Investigation to Identify Technology Limitations Involved in Transitioning to HFR-Free PCB Materials

Technical Library | 2013-05-16 15:52:00.0

In response to a growing concern within the Electronic Industry to the transition to Halogen-Free laminates (HFR-Free) within the Client Market space (Desktop and Notebook computers) iNEMI initiated a HFR-Free Leadership Workgroup to evaluate the readiness of the Industry to make this transition. The HFR-Free Leadership WG concluded that the electronic industry is ready for the transition and that the key electrical and thermo-mechanical properties of the new HFR-Free laminates can meet the required criteria. The HFR-Free Leadership WG verified that the laminate suppliers can meet the capacity demands for these new HFR-Free laminates and developed a "Test Suite Methodology" (TSM) that can facilitate the comparison and choice of the right laminate to replace brominated FR4 in the Client space...
