FRACTURE TOUGHNESS OF THERMALLY CONDUCTIVE ADHESIVES

Thermally conductive adhesives provide many advantages over traditional mechanical fastening techniques. Specifically, they use less material and space and are more amenable to automation than existing solutions. The thermal and mechanical properties of these materials are well understood but little work has been done to characterize and understand their toughness and fracture behavior. This paper presents the effects of filler loading as well as matrix composition on the fracture toughness of thermally conductive silicone adhesives. It was observed that the fracture toughness of these materials increased significantly with initial filler loading, and that the mechanical properties and fracture toughness depended on the molecular architecture of the matrix used.

The need in complexity for microwave space products such as active BFNs (Beam Forming Networks) is increasing, with a significantly growing number of amplitude / phase control points (number of beams * numbers of radiating elements). As a consequence, the RF component’s package topology is evolving (larger number of I/Os, interconnections densification ...) which directly affect the routing and architecture of the multilayer boards they are mounted on. It then becomes necessary to improve the density of these boards (...) The addition of surfacants in the preparation of the inks usually results in additional process steps, potentially increasing cost, as well as material waste, where the surfactants also often have a negative impact on specific properties of the printed features, such as comprising electrical conductivity of metallic structures. Voids in solder joints plague many electronics manufacturers. Do you have voids in your life? We have good news for you, there are many excellent ways to "Fill the Void." This paper is a continuation of previous work on voiding in which the following variables were studied: water soluble lead-free solder pastes, a variety of stencil designs, and reflow profiles. Quad Flat No-Lead (QFN) component thermal pads were used as the test vehicle. The voiding results were summarized and recommendations were made for reduction of voiding.

Applying Microscopic Analytic Techniques For Failure Analysis In Electronic Assemblies

The present paper gives an overview of surface failures, internal nonconformities and solders joint failures detected by microscopic analysis of electronic assemblies. Optical microscopy (stereomicroscopy) and Fourier-Transform- Infrared (FTIR) microscopy is used for documentation and failure localization on electronic samples surface. For internal observable conditions a metallographic cross-section analysis of the sample is required. The aim of this work is to present some internal and external observable nonconformities which frequently appear in electronic assemblies. In order to detect these nonconformities, optical microscopy, cross section analysis, FTIR-microscopy and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive spectrometry (SEM-EDS) were used as analytical techniques.

An Automatic Optical Inspection System for the Diagnosis of Printed Circuits Based on Neural Networks

The aim of this work is to define a procedure to develop diagnostic systems for Printed Circuit Boards, based on Automated Optical Inspection with low cost and easy adaptability to different features. A complete system to detect mounting defects in the circuits is presented in this paper. A low cost image acquisition system with high accuracy has been designed to fit this application. Afterward, the resulting images are processed using the Wavelet Transform and Neural Networks, for low computational cost and acceptable precision. The wavelet space represents a compact support for efficient feature extraction with the localization property. The proposed solution is demonstrated on several defects in different kind of circuits.
