IPC — Association Connecting Electronics Industries® has released IPC-1601, Printed Board Handling and Storage Guidelines. The industry's sole standard on the handling, packaging and storage of printed boards, IPC-1601 provides users with guidance on how to protect printed boards from contamination, physical damage, solderability degradation, electrostatic discharge and moisture uptake.

The Nominating and Governance Committee of the IPC Board of Directors presented nine candidates for election at the IPC Annual Meeting on Tuesday, February 28, 2012, in conjunction with IPC APEX EXPO® at the San Diego Convention Center. Three candidates were elected as board officers and will serve two-year terms beginning February 2012. Six candidates were elected as board directors and will serve four-year terms beginning February 2012.

The $5000 Charles Hutchins Educational Grant, co-sponsored by the SMTA and CIRCUITS ASSEMBLY magazine, was established in memory of past SMTA president, educator, mentor, and industry colleague, Dr. Charles Hutchins. The SMTA has awarded $100,000 to Hutchins Grant recipients since 1998!

In recognition and acknowledgment of their extraordinary contributions to the Wiring Harness Manufacturer's Association (WHMA) and the cable and wire harness industry, four long-time WHMA members were presented with coveted WHMA awards. Two WHMA Hall of Fame and two WHMA Volunteer Excellence Awards were presented at WHMA's 29th Annual Wire Harness Conference on February 16.

Obtaining data from the supply chain to support chemical ("substance") content reporting for article (hardware) products remains extremely challenging and resource-intensive for industries such as Aerospace and Defense (AD). However, the increasing use of materials and substances declaration standards promotes efficiency in obtaining such data. IPC and IAEG® (International Aerospace Environmental Group) encourage the use of IPC-1754, Materials and Substances Declaration for Aerospace and Defense and Other Industries in the AD industry and its global supply chain.

SMTA is delighted to announce the JoAnn Stromberg Leadership Scholarship recently received a five-year commitment of support from Indium Corporation, Libra Industries, and STI Electronics. Rod Howell, CEO of Libra Industries, moved the scholarship even further, pledging an additional five-year commitment. Donations made over the next five years will enable funding for 10 recipients.
