The fourth annual IPC Hand Soldering World Championship at IPC APEX EXPO® on February 26 drew eight competitors from around the world. Victors from IPC hand soldering competitions in China, Europe, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and the United States were challenged with building a functional electronics assembly within a one-hour time limit. Completing the championship round with a nearly perfect score of 247 points out of 248, Min Seok Kim, Samsung Thales Company Limited (Korea), was crowned champion, earning him a $1,000 cash prize, a new Metcal MX5210 soldering station and bragging rights as the world's best hand solderer.

The fifth annual IPC Hand Soldering World Championship at IPC APEX EXPO® March 16-17 drew 10 competitors from around the world. Victors from IPC hand soldering competitions in Indonesia, China, Europe, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, and India were challenged with building a functional electronics assembly within a one-hour time limit. Completing the championship round with a score of 534 points out of 550, Vu Thi Xuan, UMC Electronics Vietnam Ltd., was crowned champion, earning her a $1,000 cash prize, a new America Hakko Products, Inc. soldering station and bragging rights as the world's best hand solderer.

IPC, in conjunction with ELECTROSUB 2017, conducted the IPC Hand Soldering Competition at ELECTROSUB 2017 in Budapest, Hungary. The competition in Budapest drew the highest number of professional hand soldering competitors to date in Europe of 51. Unique to ELECTROSUB 2017 was an IPC HSC competition for high school students. The 16 high school competitors were not going to be out done by their older professional competitors as they put their best soldering techniques on display vying for cash prizes for first, second and third place. Taking first place in the high school competition with a cash prize of €30 was Mate Toth, Technical High School, Komarno, Slovakia. In second place with a cash prize of €20 went to Bence Marki, Palfy Water Management Technical High School, Szolnok, Hungary. Taking third place with a cash prize of €10 was Gilles Cumin, from Lajos Bardos Elementary School, Lagymanyos, Budapest, Hungary.

The competition was fierce as 27 competitors went soldering iron to soldering iron in IPC’s Hand Soldering Regional Qualification Competition at SMT Hybrid Packaging 2018 in Nuremberg, Germany. Of the 27 boards submitted by the competitors only four of the electronic assemblies were functional. Taking first place and a cash prize of €300 was Catherine Cardinal-Simoan, Thales International, who earned 422 points out of a possible 445.

The competition was fierce as 34 competitors participated in the IPC’s Hand Soldering Competition at SMT Hybrid Packaging 2017 in Nuremberg, Germany. Taking first place and a cash prize of €300 was Elaine Chesnais, Thales International, who earned 433 points out of a possible 437. Chesnais was the second-place winner at SMT in 2016.
