A new study conducted by IPC — Association Connecting Electronics Industries® predicts that reporting requirements for conflict minerals proposed by the U.S. Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) would cost the electronic interconnect industry an estimated $279 million in the first year of implementation for due diligence alone, compared to the government’s estimate of $16.5 million.

Counterfeit products are reported to have grown to a $600 billion business worldwide. The electronics assembly industry has been impacted, with reports of counterfeit feeders, spare parts and software causing equipment breakdowns and production delays. To assist IPC member companies in keeping their equipment and lines running, the Surface Mount Equipment Manufacturers Association (SMEMA) Council of IPC – Association Connecting Electronics Industries® is creating an “anti-counterfeit tool kit.”

IPC has filed comments with the U.S. Department of State’s Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC) urging them to protect the security of U.S. defense equipment by ensuring export control protection of design information for printed circuit boards for defense equipment. IPC strongly recommended that DDTC make clear that International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) apply to any printed board designs for defense items on the United States Munitions List (USML).

Today, Congressman Rob Woodall (R-GA-7) met with executives and employees of IPC member-companies, Hunter Technology in Lawrenceville, Ga. and Viscom in Duluth, Ga., as part of a nationwide effort to discuss with policymakers legislative and regulatory issues that affect the electronics manufacturing industry.
