For the first time the ASM Americas Roadshow stopped also in Minnesota at the facility of our partners E-tronix, located just outside Minneapolis in St Louis Park, MN. During the five day event, the ASM and E-tronix team hosted ten different customer groups, each for a half day of detailed private demonstrations on the latest DEK and SIPLACE equipment, as well as productivity enhancing software tools.

New placement modules, tapeless feeders, new screen printers and the first expert system that optimizes SMT processes automatically. At Productronica 2015 (November 10-13, Munich Trade Fair Center), technology leader ASM Assembly Systems will present a show unlike any other under the motto “On the move to the Smart #1 SMT Factory”. On 650 square meters at booth A3.377, the SMT experts will lay out their roadmap to the Smart Factory with a “Speed Quality” line and a “Flexible Quality” line featuring totally innovative technologies. The focus will be best-in-class equipment, automation tools, production process networking and integration, and transparent material logistics. At the “Speed Quality” line, new SIPLACE TX placement modules will ring in the mass placement of super-small 0201 (metric) components. A single SIPLACE TX module alone can place up to 78,000 of these per hour at full speed at smallest footprint. With its compact design, it also sets new records in speed, floorspace performance and placement accuracy. Components in sizes from 0402 through 01005 will be supplied loosely and without tapes thanks to the new SIPLACE BulkFeeder. This ASM innovation finally bans reels and splicing from the SMT production floor. With the DEK NeoHorizon and DEK NeoHorizon Back-to-Back, the ASM team will also unveil new, powerful screen printers. Most of the visitors’ attention, however, will be focused on the ASM ProcessExpert. This first inline expert system in the industry establishes a new product category in electronics manufacturing. By running virtual prints based on Gerber data, the ASM ProcessExpert subjects the stencil to a DFM (design for manufacturability) health check. By stabilizing and optimizing the printing process automatically, this highly innovative system represents a milestone on the path to self-optimizing SMT lines. Each of these innovations constitutes a building block for the Smart Factory.

Thanks to strong demand for SIPLACE and DEK solutions, the company became the world’s largest maker of SMT equipment for the first time in 2015. The Smart #1 SMT Factory concept is expected to provide additional impulses for continued growth. At the Productronica show, the industry’s leading trade fair held in November, ASM introduced a series of new platforms, systems and solutions for advanced programming, process integration and material logistics. They enable the customers to move their production one step at a time towards SMT-specific Industry 4.0 concepts that enable them to manufacture with even more flexibility and efficiency. Lauber also believes that his company is perfectly positioned for future technologies in the wafer-based integration of components to form complex modules (such as fan-out WLCSP and system-in-package).

Following on from recent investments to augment its test facilities, including a new flying probe tester and additional AOI facilities, the investment continues at JJS Electronics with orders recently placed for a complete new state-of- the-art surface mount line. The line is in response to increased demand for their PCB assembly services and will be fully operational in January.

In the impressive booth, which was largest yet covering 650 square meters, visitors had to fight for space to view “live” the progress the company has made on the path to the Smart #1 SMT Factory. Equally popular were the workshops and product presentations ASM Assembly System’s offered during the technology inhouse show at its Munich headquarters. Highlights at both locations included the SIPLACE BulkFeeder for tape-free component feeding, the new DEK NeoHorizon printers in interaction with the ASM ProcessExpert as the first self-learning inline expert system for SMT production, and integrated SIPLACE solutions for material logistics. The new ultra-compact SIPLACE TX high-volume placement modules received Global SMT & Packaging’s innovation award in the “High-Volume Placement” category. Also popular was a study which ASM developers presented in cooperation with robotics manufacturer KUKA. It demonstrated how intelligent, self-propelled robots can help line operators refill components or pick up component reels from the automatic SIPLACE Material Tower storage system.
