The SMTA is pleased to announce three inspiring keynote presentations scheduled during SMTA International 2019. Adam Steltzner, Ph.D., NASA, will keynote SMTA International the morning of Tuesday, September 24 with his presentation “The Right Kind of Crazy: A True Story of Teamwork, Leadership and High Stakes Innovation.” Adam will share the challenges he faced leading the landing team for NASA’s Curiosity Rover on its mission to Mars. High density PWB (printed wiring board) with microvia technology is required for implementation of high density and high I/O area array packages (AAP). COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) AAP packaging technologies in high reliability versions with 1.27 mm pitch are now being considered for use in a number of NASA systems including the Space Shuttle and Mars Rovers. NASA functional system designs are requiring ever more denser AAP packages and board features, making board microvia technology very attractive for effectively routing a large number of package inputs/outputs.

Most of the electronics industry by now knows about tin whiskers. They know whiskers are slim metallic filaments that emanate from the surface of tin platings. They know these filaments are conductive and can cause shorts across adjacent conductors. And they know that these shorts can cause some really bad failures (see nepp.nasa.gov/whisker/ for a list longer than you need). But, with all of this knowledge, the industry is still struggling on how to predict and prevent these "Nefarious Needles of Pain".
