Does anyone know of a standard stencil thickness for BGA'S. We currently use 4 to 5 mil stencils depending on component mix. Is an aperature reduction required for BGA'S. If so what percentage. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks MRMAINT

Aperture size should vary with the component [pitch]. That size should be the same a the pad size. So, generally pinching is not required. Indium discusses BGA apertures on their site [ http://www.indium.com ]

Each of these methods is best-suited for a given situation, board layout and skill level of operators performing the BGA rework. This discussion will layout the various methods and present the specific circumstances for which the specific technique is most wellsuited. In addition, the pluses and minuses for each of the approaches will be discussed in detail.

Market forces, particularly legislation against the use of lead in electronics, have driven electronics manufacturers towards lead-free solders for PCB assembly and rework. This approach creates challenges because of the relatively high temperatures needed for lead-free soldering. Additionally, lead-free solder alloys typically do not wet or wick as easily as Sn63Pb37 leaded types. As PCBs often include both BGAs and simpler discrete devices, a lead-free rework capability should include a suitable soldering station and a BGA rework station. This article shows how such equipment can be adapted to overcome the lead-free issues and provide a successful reworking facility.
