Solder Paste Printing to 0.005

Electronics Forum | Mon Dec 27 13:34:28 EST 2010 | ppcbs

Does anyone have any experience in printing solder paste on a 0.0065" pad? I have a requirement to attach single chips with 600 to 2400 connections. The chip has a 0.005" solder ball, 0.010 pitch. Attaching to a substrate with a 0.0065" pad. An

Use a 0.002" to 0.003" thick stencil. Use an electroformed stencil from Photo Stencil or one of the others. Use -500 +635 paste or a -500 paste or type 5 or greater paste. I have printed at 0.008" pitch with 0.004" pads. It can be done.

We've been doing this for over 10 years using flux. We print a tacky flux first using an 0.002 or 0.003" thick stencil, then print paste using a thicker stencil with the underside half etched to keep it away from the flux. In our case, we can't jus

Am I doing my maths right? 0.005 inches is 0.127mm which is crap for a stencil. Our supplier (laser cut)has an aperture tolerance of 0.005mm (approx. 0.000197 inches).

Can anyone advise a good starting point for a temp profile for on 0.05" and 1206 component boards? These boards are simple by todays standards and do not contain any fine pitch or other special components. Thanks in advance... MM

Go with no greater than 0.005". Pleanty of paste and minimal shorting issues. 0.004" will even work

If you failed math like I did. A 0.005 inch stencil would work fine for those parts. Most stencils are 0.004in for fine pitch 1005s 201s. 0.005in is probably the most common generic stencil. 0.006in generally is if you need extra solder for big parts

Does class 2 vs class 3 PCBs effect variance/tolerance in terms of actual positioning of pads/traces? For example, if fiducial is to be at 10mm. What's the tolerance for class 2 vs class 3? [variance allowed] Does panelization have any effect on t
