We are experiencing cracking of 1206 .1uf/50V capacitors on our boards. Design is keeping the caps away from the board edge 0.200 and perpendicular to the longest edge but still they crack even in the interior of the board. Recommendations? bds are

You can find some input on IPC-HDBK-830 Guidelines for Design, Selection and Apllication of Conf Coating. Also look at IPC-CH-65A, Guidelines for Cleaning of Printed Board Assemblies. Regards...........GS

The fluxes used in the board manufacture are RMA fluxes. The board is cleaned according to the IPC standards and tested to ensure quality. I am thinking of designing a DOE to isolate the problem

It's a functional test over a number of hours/days designed to give an accelerated life test, to detect possible faults, intermittants etc. You tend to run the boards in a hotter & harsher environment to reduce the test cycle time.

Thank you for the advice, Mika. My question however was not generated by a practical problem, but rather from the fact that we have to design an equipment which must interface with other conveyors. By now well ignore those two points. Regards, Ola
