Enhancing Thermal Performance in Embedded Computing for Ruggedized Military and Avionics Applications.

Technical Library | 2014-07-17 17:01:10.0

Embedded computing systems used in many military and avionics applications are trending toward higher heat fluxes, and as a result performance is being hindered by thermal limitations. This is intensified by the high ambient conditions experience by today’s modern warfighter. In many applications liquid cooling is replacing air flow through chassis for both thermal and environmental benefits(...) This paper outlines a series of passive thermal improvements which are easily integrated into legacy, or existing, systems and can provide a 3-4x increase in dissipated power.

Advanced Technologies for Industry – Product Watch Flexible and printed electronics

Technical Library | 2021-07-13 19:51:10.0

Flexible electronics refers to a class of lightweight, flexible and electronic sensing components and electronic devices built on stretchable substrates1 that are used (and can be used) for a broad set of products and applications such as displays and sensors. The most prominent characteristic is that they can bend in contrast to electronic systems built in rigid materials. They are manufactured on flexible plastic substrates, such as polyamide, PEEK2 or transparent conductive polyester films3, or other materials such as paper, textile, or thin glass. The term flexible also refers to the roll-to-roll manufacturing process.

Methods Used In The Detection Of Counterfeit Electronic Components

Technical Library | 2022-10-04 16:43:10.0

In this paper I will discuss the different methods and equipment used to detect counterfeit electronic parts, specifically integrated circuits as well as demonstrate some of the "red flags" that help to identify a part as being suspected counterfeit. We will begin with the initial receipt of the parts and the examination of the outer packaging, the basic visual inspection of the parts, the visual inspection and documentation at high magnification, permanency marking, blacktop test, scrape test, XRF (RoHS), decapsulation, X-ray, basic electrical testing, C-SAM, full function testing and limited function testing.

Using Stencil: Design to Reduce SMT Defects

Technical Library | 2023-06-12 19:46:10.0

Solder paste printing is understood to be the leading contributor of defects in the electronics assembly process. Because yield accounts for such a large percentage of the margin, the greatest opportunity to improve profitability in the assembly of most electronics can be gained by reducing or eliminating solder defects. This article examines process adjustments made through stencil design that correct a misalignment situation between the PCB and stencil, leading to a 43% reduction in assembly defects. Examples of each are found in Table 1.

Effect of Reflow Profile on SnPb and SnAgCu Solder Joint Shear Force

Technical Library | 2007-03-08 19:31:10.0

Reflow profile has significant impact on solder joint performance because it influences wetting and microstructure of the solder joint. The degree of wetting, the microstructure (in particular the intermetallic layer), and the inherent strength of the solder all factor into the reliability of the solder joint. This paper presents experimental results on the effect of reflow profile on both 63%Sn 37%Pb (SnPb) and 96.5%Sn 3.0%Ag 0.5%Cu (SAC 305) solder joint shear force.

Achieving SMT Compatible Flip Chip Assembly With No-Flow Fluxing Underfills

Technical Library | 2007-08-09 12:23:10.0

Recent developments in No Flow-Fluxing Underfill (NFFUF) products have demonstrated their utility to enhance the reliability of flip chip assemblies with reduced processing steps over conventional capillary flow methods. This basic work considered processing conditions such as dispensed volume and placement force, speed and dwell time. Further evaluations of these new products on a variety of flip chip assembly configurations manufactured by various processes have been undertaken to provide further evidence of their suitability and potential in high volume electronic manufacturing. This paper summarizes the recent evaluations and discusses new studies of additional assembly configurations, which include higher input/output (l/O) counts up to full arrays in excess of 1200 l/Os.

The Reliability Challenges of QFN Packaging

Technical Library | 2010-05-27 22:12:10.0

The quad flat pack no lead or quad flat non-leaded (QFN) is one of the fastest growing package types in the electronics industry today. While the advantages of QFNs are well documented, concerns arise with its reliability and manufacturability. Acceptance of this package, especially in long-life, severe-environment, high-reliability applications, is currently limited. One of the most common drivers for reliability failures is inappropriate adoption of new technologies, such as the case with QFN. In this presentation, we will review and discuss QFN related reliability concerns and challenges, and propose Physics-of-Failure (PoF) based approaches to allow the confident introduction of QFN components into electronics products.

Combination of Spray and Soak Improves Cleaning under Bottom Terminations

Technical Library | 2014-10-23 18:10:10.0

The functional reliability of electronic circuits determines the overall reliability of the product in which the final products are used. Market forces including more functionality in smaller components, no-clean lead-free solder technologies, competitive forces and automated assembly create process challenges. Cleanliness under the bottom terminations must be maintained in harsh environments. Residues under components can attract moisture and lead to leakage currents and the potential for electrochemical migration (...) The purpose of this research study is to evaluate innovative spray and soak methods for removing low residue flux residues and thoroughly rinsing under Bottom Termination and Leadless Components
