Has anyone out there installed these devices on an S20 or had a head crash without them? Are they worth the investment to safeguard the machine? Is there another solution that one might consider?

Depends on what machine you want to get. Linux OP used on S13-S15-S20-F3-F4 for a time but they changed to WinXP - after '96. The new software with WinXp is more stable as the Lunix version. The Linux version was really sensitive of LinePC-StationPC

I just had to replace the hard drive in the SC and the MC. I partitiones the MC drive and installed all operating systems. The machine boots up and gets past "software booting", "conversion of machine data", and then hangs on "initializing machine"

I think it is in the ideal.ma or actual.ma file. You could also use the first RMOS boot disk. This will ask you for it there.
