Electronics Forum | Tue Apr 10 13:12:41 EDT 2001 | davef

You've told us nothing about your situation, process, boards, or anything!!! If you leave some boards with very fine solder connections on the shelf for a cuppla years, the grain will become coarse. What do you mean when you say "grainy"? What is

Re: Dull Solder

Edmund, following-on from Wolfy: Back in the old days, anyone who could spell "sodder" considered "bright and shiny connections" GOOD and "dull and grainy connections" BAD. Now, "dull and grainy" connections can be either GOOD or BAD, depending on

Solderability problem

Electronics Forum | Tue Mar 25 17:37:59 EDT 2008 | hussman

If the component "fell off" sounds like double sided reflow - which is most likely a profile issue. If the parts just don't solder, could be many variables. I've had supervisors accuse ovens for bad profiles cuase they had missing parts. Too bad

Sorry I keep forgetting you lot are backwards in the old metric system :0) anyhoo, yes IPC, the bastions of right well as long as your board is only 1.6mm thick (sorry 62mils)say that you need 75% min general and 50% on ground planes. I'd like to se

No Clean Solder/WS Flux

The big problem we saw was the appearance of the solder joint after the water wash process. We saw the joints turn white through the absorption of moisture. Looked real bad but still functioned. I would stick with using only one of the processes a

Ag/Pd termination reflow soldering issues

I don't suggest using Pd/Ag or Ag/Pd terminated components unless you are forced to use them. You often see a line of demarcation that suggests a poorly wetted solder joint. I have had bad experiences with Pd/Ag terminated capacitors. Even when so

A bad solder joint, usually caused by a lack of knowledge & experience, possibly stemming from getting everyone else to do your home work!

Tombstone/ Poor welting

Pd/Ag doesn't usually dissolve (leach) nearly as bad as Ag only. In my hybrid days, we would use 62/36/2 solder. The 2% silver helps saturate the solder joint and thus keep the Ag from being leached away by the Sn.

Try Re-seating the card that connects the ISA slot from the computer mother board to the I/O Dpram card. It may be worth checking the ISA card for bad solder joints. The computer mother board could be going bad. Check for vented electrolytic caps. Ho

BGA inspection in mass production

Electronics Forum | Mon Nov 25 18:43:29 EST 2013 | hegemon

Without the proper tools in house you will not be able to determine anything but the most obvious problems. At minimum, some side looking microscope that would allow visual inspection of a row or two, and to be able to rule out bridging. Using that
