Basic rule of thumb for lead free manufacturing: If the joint looks "too good" it probably has lead in it. This, of course is based on comparison observations of other components on your assembly.

One of our customers picked up an assembly, dropped it on a concrete floor, then kicked it down the corridor. Broke his toe on the steel enclosure, & suffice to say never tried it again. Nothing like decent, documented & controlled scientific testi

Anyone have any recommendations for hot air, hand held rework stations? We currently use Hakko for leaded assembly. We already have a sniper for bga rework.

The hand assembled part is soldered in? If so, the white residue may be from the operator using some added wave solder flux to get better wetting when hand soldering.

You can find some input on IPC-HDBK-830 Guidelines for Design, Selection and Apllication of Conf Coating. Also look at IPC-CH-65A, Guidelines for Cleaning of Printed Board Assemblies. Regards...........GS

Well, at that value point, I'd go with the hourly ( unburdoned ) high-skill rework/repair rate up to 50%-60% of the board value. If this is part of an integrated system ( in-house assembly ) repair to value ratio could go even higher.
