Chris is right. You can do a good visual after placement if you have outline marks on your silk screen. That helps a lot. What size BGAs are you talking about. That would determine how critical you want to get with inspection.

Another major consideration is moisture. I saw a batch of BGA's delaminate. With the X-ray it looked like the balls were shorted. (Well they were but I mean that wasn't why the BGAs had failed.)

V-groove question

I think I phrased that poorly. I'm talking about cutting the V-groove into the panel by the fabricator so that it can be depaneled later. Or did you understand me perfectly? :P I ask because your description sounds like the depanelers I've seen us

According to your low/mid volume production. I suggest you to use the Fuji XP 143, XP 243 or QP 341E with MTU. The cost of new totally less than 250k.

I think XP series will suit your needs. They are inexpensive, high accuracy placement & long lasting machine. Ekra printer & BTU are strongly recommended.
