Loading leadless parts(passives)by hand

Electronics Forum | Wed Mar 03 00:20:08 EST 1999 | Clarissa Ortner

We are a small division. We are starting up a leadless line with an old screen printer and a convection oven. At this time we don't intend to get any sort of pick and place assistance and wil be loading by hand. We find the biggest problem with th

Preheater for hand soldering

Electronics Forum | Thu Feb 21 12:49:07 EST 2013 | deanm

We had the same problem with one of our boards with ground planes so that it required preheat using a hotplate before hand soldering. Then I learned about the Metcal MX-5000 series soldering irons. I was skeptical at first but we can now solder the s

Leadforming hand tool

Hello All, I know this is "SMT"Net, but I have a question regarding thru-hole lead-forming. I know we, as SMT personnel, also have duties in thru-hole from time to time. I am looking for a TO metal can leadforming tool with either fixed or adjustabl

I'm thinking that your soldering irons are not up to the task. take a tip temperature measurement of the iron prior to and during soldering process. With high temp solder alloys you need an iron that provides continuous temperature at the tip. Doing

Melissa, Thank you very much for your detailed instructions. I'm sure that will be a huge help when we start on our next board. The only question I have left is whether you prefer a hot air or infrared preheater. It looks like Hakko makes both type

Thanks for the advice. We have only done one PCB with HMP solder and did not use preheating, but I've been wondering if it would have been helpful since we had some trouble getting the solder to flow. If you have any more specific advice about the te

Stencil Cleaning by hand

I would advise against using IPA for stencil cleaning It may initially seem to produce good results but the way it works you end up with more problems. IPA is good at removing liquid fluxes but it dries out and cements solid fluxes to the stencils

Depending on your requirements, you could range from a hair dryer, heat gun, toaster oven, hot plate, on up to digitally controlled surfaces and convective systems. You'll have to gauge for yourself whether you are just trying to add some heat energy

assuming Sn05Pb93.5Ag1.5 Without knowing what you are trying to solder, PTH or SMT, the time might not be that far off. Does that time include stripping, cleaning, plating the leads prior to soldering onto the board?... pre-tinning the board as well
