It could be outgassing, are there any electrolitic caps or anything else nearby that may contain air or moisture? You could try baking the parts before use.

probably volatiles in the joint outgassing as it comes over the wave, is the joint a yellowy colour as well, or any pictures we can view cheers greg

The most likely cause is moisture vapor outgassing violently from the Tant package. They are known to be moisture sensitive. Try baking some at 120C overnight and reflowing those.

A quick experiment idea: Try reflowing a bare board prior to assembly. Perhaps your boards have moisture and outgassing issues.

What material is used to cap a via? Is it the > standard LPI Process/Material? we tent vias all the time, mostly to assist with assembly and the majority of the time outgassing is not a problem. What is the purpose in your case?

Usually the print specifies the material since the design is qualified with it in place. I've used several from Scotchweld 2216, Scotchweld DP190, Hysol E-20HP, to NASA outgassing qualified Masterbond 10HT.

Thanks for the comments & suggestions. Here's some info garnered from a telecon w/the PCB Fab house: -the blind via's extend from layer 2-17...this was a revelation. The info from our customer was that the via's only extended down 2 layers. Did I men
