The traditional method of starting an AC induction motor "across the line" results in full voltage, current, and torque being applied immediately when the motor is started, and likewise, being removed immediately when the motor is stopped. While this is the most simple starting method, the high inrush current (often 6 to 7 times the motor's rated current) and peak starting torque can damage the motor, driven equipment, and product. Across the line starting also causes high peak power demand, which can trigger peak demand fees from the utility company. A soft starter can eliminate these problems by gradually increasing voltage to the motor terminals during startup, providing a controlled ramp-up to full speed. This lowers inrush current and controls starting torque, reducing mechanical shocks to the system and the product.

The PTC (positive temperature coefficient) relay is directly connected in series with the secondary winding (start winding) and in parallel with the main winding of the motor. When AC 220V is applied to the two windings, a phase difference will be generated due to phase separation, thus forming an elliptical rotating magnetic field and generating a starting torque to drive the normal operation of the motor. After that, because the PTC relay is under a high resistance state, the starting circuit is nearly disconnected, and only the running winding drives the motor to run.

The throttle Position Sensor (TPS), located on the butterfly spindle, is operated by the throttle, and its installation varies according to the structure. For a traditional mechanical cable throttle, the throttle position sensor is usually installed on the side of the throttle body in the form of an independent component. And its rotation openness is driven by the throttle shaft, as shown in figure 2. For the commonly used electronic throttle, the throttle position sensor is integrated into the electronic throttle control component, as shown in figure 3.
