It is very common to relate ENIG pad surface finishing with BLACK PAD defect. However, is anyone know why BLACK PAD defect only happen on fine pitch pad areas suach as BGA, QFP? Why this defect did not or seldom happen on capacitor @ resistor pad??

We have our circuit board vendor put a solder mask dot over the vias after HASL process. It's a little more expensive but eliminates the problem that you are talking about.

Good idea Dave F!! never thought of superglue to cap off the via, easier than remasking and curing for sure Russ

Dennis We know that cyanoacrylates are flammable and breathing hazard before curing, but are unaware that the cured adhesive had those properties also. Can you give us documentation of that fact?

That process does work great Chris, we have done literally thousands of parts like this. Leave a bit of pad outside of daughter board. Russ
