Yes, to calibrate you need calibration plate and calibration "parts". There's something you can try, though. There is a setting for on-head camera position. You can modify these values (write down original values, of course) manually and then try it

I think it would have to be pretty heavy to fall out of the c fingers. I have never seen this happen in 30 years of wave soldering.

Yes if you adjust the thickness to be thin than the machine raise the PCB more to the stencil - than the foil have better tension but it string out faster.
