I know you said you checked your clamps but another look will do no harm. we had a very similar issue a while back, and it turned out that the plastic shim under the chase clamp magnet was damaged. This caused the chase clamps not to release properly

I don't know of any standard, but do know most suppliers will sell you sub-par displays. Inner layer cracking is usually the biggest defect due to handling. We had our supplier in and they showed us what to look for under magnification @400 times.

Yep, many of us have seen this firsthand. I had a customer who fouled up a job, then "found" a deal on some (10) very expensive Xylinx parts, and badly needed these parts to complete the job. Everything looked good afterwards, but nothing worked. X
