Could use a little help here. Can anyone clarify to me the cause and fix of chip caps/resistors tombstoning following reflow? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

| What to look for that causes tombstoning and the corective action. | 1:check reflow profile 2:reduce pad size 3:reduce deposition of paste(stencil thickness/opening of aperatures) 4:Check components for solderability Good Luck

What variables that you have tested are sensitive to producing tombstoning defects and what advice can you provide to minimize them?

I have a production line that is running ceramic substrate's. The line begins having tombstone's when the outside temperature begins to drop. I have moved our nitrogen tanks to the inside of the building and this done nothing. Does anyone have any id

You may want to check your stencil aperture design too. The base ball pad design worked fine to solve my tombstone problem.

Hi, We had tomb-stoning on a product, and it was quite severe. We eliminated it by reducing the amount of solder paste on the small passible component pads. We used a 5 thou stencil, with 20% reduction, and it eliminated the problem. Regards, Gra

Get started by searching the fine SMTnet Archives. We love talking about tombstoning and solderballs. Good luck.
