The biggest problem is getting paste on the board. We ran a board that had 8 per and would get an occasional insufficient solder joint. I would look into doing the boards with something like a SiPad process (www.sipad.net) My $0.02

I am sure you can reflow lead free in any oven but i thought i read that lead free requires a cooling stage to get the solder joints reflowed "correctly".

Lupo, Omron AOI systems are definitely the best and most accurate, with the exception of there desktop system which is poor in comparison. They used to be very expensive , but I believe their new models are well priced. If you want solder joint ins

Hi Fred, Were you able to develop enough confidence with the AOI to eliminate manual visual inspections and save money/time? How did you manage this and still get good solder joint quality? Thanks, George

I have a problem with a Murata cap chip type resonator(ROHS). After the reflow process, the soldering joints flow to one side of the component. I did not have this problem with the leaded component. Did someone have a solution for this problem?

Thank D.B. Cooper, actually this LED has 3 sides termination but no termination at underneath of LED. So this LED tends to float rather than performing solder joint during reflow process.

It's impossible to do so.The cooling phase is important to perform the strength of the solder joint.Without this phase, the good solderbility will not able to achieved.

Very interesting tread, many thanks to all. Matt please, now what does it mean for you? Will your custmer accept dull solder joints or will the plating be changed ? (ie. HASL, ENIG, etc) Tnks and regards GS*

I'm confused. A paste Supplier suggested to turn off nitrogen during reflow because it is one source of voiding of bga solder joints...is this true? regards, Dreamy

Why you do not try by yourself ? Run some BGA reflow with and without N2 then X-ray the solder joints. Regards GS
