Conformal Coat Underfill on HD connectors

Electronics Forum | Thu Sep 09 10:50:59 EDT 2004 | agkettle

Does anyone have any experience with underfill of HD connectors? New customer wishes to underfill 6 HD connectors that have been pressed into PCB. Capillary action is causing the conformal coat to wick up into connector. Material is acrylic.

Check with your connector supplier, but most press-fit contacts will pierce through Types UR & XY conformal coat (military approved). Acrylic (AR) Urethane (UR) Epoxy (ER) Silicone (SR) Parylene (XY)

Hi Dave, Thanks a lot for the clarification. In order to be in compliance with IPC standard, ALL criteria has to be met [in conformance]. If either one did not met, then this is a non-conformance. Again, thanks really appreciate your help. With be

I was looking to see how others are handling conformal coating PCBs containing BGAs. We have looked at underfills, but none meet the reworkability we need.

Whether or not conformal coating creates a reliability problem if it bridges the gap between the board and bottom of the part depends on the properties of the coating. A low modulus coating is fine, but one thats modulus increases at colder temperat

It's weird that it would be just 0805. When we see this it relates to a single part number and it goes way after a time. We use a Humiseal 1B73. I've emailed you the contact for a person that is very knowledgeable on conformal coatings.

A customer of mine is using Chemtronics (Circuit Works) CW3300 Overcoat pen. This is an acrylic conformal coating. It cures at Room temperature. They need something similar that can be UV cured in a pen form. Any suggestions?
