Weller Desoldering Tweezers | 1 October, 2007

I have the Weller WTA50 desoldering tweezers, and have a question for any of you that use these. Quite a few times when I need to replace the tips on these things, the two little screws are So stuck, I either end up stripping the inside of them or outside, trying to get them unscrewed. Sometimes having the tweezers On and heated, helps, but not always. And, not getting them out, renders the set useless... :(

So, I was wondering, if there are any different types of screws or ways to secure the tips in, that Won't errode, or whatever they're doing, and get stuck in there over time? Or am I just sol...

Ungar used to sell a little tube of clear stuff that they called something like "tip anti-seize". I used it on Imperial irons, back in the days before electronic temperature control. The pure copper threads on the heating element would seize to the plated tips on the first use, then the expensive heating element would become a disposable when the tip needed changing if you didn't use this stuff. I have no idea what it was or if they still sell it. I'm guessing it might have been a silicone oil, for really high temp stability.

We use copper grease on the bolts of our wave solder machines solder pot. The working temperature is up to 1000degC. I believe that the boiling point of mineral oil is a little over 300degC and you will exceed this with iron temperatures, especially in lead-free. You can get copper grease from most automotive suppliers and it is quite cheap.

Thanks Jon! Good to know! I don't think my iron is ever set at 300*C, haha :), so mineral oil is probably not my best bet. I'll try getting some of that copper grease.

Weller themselfs recommend http://www.cooperhandtools.com/brands/CF_Files/model_detail.cfm?upc=037103185327 for their threaded desoldering tips, worked fine for us, should do the trick for screws too.
