A binocular microscope gives just a little more info than the video would, as you have views from two slightly different angles. A good stereo microscope gives more resolution or sharpness than video can. You have to take the time to set up the eyepieces for YOUR eyes, that makes a huge difference. I use it without my eyeglasses, because the glasses restrict my field of view a lot. That may not be true for everyone, but with my really bad nearsightedness, it is.
I do a lot of manual soldering and rework, not repair as much as engineering changes and experiments, but I have to chase down intermitents, too.
