Cradle to Grave Part Tracking | 12 February, 2010

How are companies handling lot tracking of parts, down to the serial number of the PCBA on which each component is being placed?

We have customers who are needing information on Mfg. Lot numbers on mission critical product in the event of Manufacturer lot issues requiring recalls.

Do you buy single lots for each build? How do you handle mixed lots? What do I need to know that I don't know to ask?

Thank you in advance for your insights!

ERP/ MRP systems can do basic traceability but often fall through as make a lot of asumptions and can not capture realtime info and account for all possible situations. I have seen alot of companies do this and there is always a 'shoe horned' system.I would look into specific Electronics Manufactering MES systems to fill the gap as they tend to have more 'coal face' capability to make it happen more accurately. Also spin off effects of doing this are usually better control of production, stock management improves etc. Most MES systems can interface-data exchange to ERP - ie be the ERPs eyes.

If your ERP is not up to task, most MES hadve seperate SQL Database and you can run on its own with reporting etc.
