ISO 9000 Versus ISO 14000

ISO 9000 Versus ISO 14000 | 22 June, 2000

Lee: ISO 9000 seems to take an approach of defining what should be done and now you the practitioner should come-up with a method of meeting that requirement. On the other hand, ISO 14000 seems to take an approach of "This is want should be done and this is how you should do it."

What are you thoughts on this?

Actuallly, think ISO14000 does not really take this approach except in the sense that it does specifically serva as a tool for companies to monitor and control their environmental impact. One expert who contributed to my book explained it to me this way: "ISO14000does not force any actions on its implementers, it simply makes you document how you pollute and document what you intend to correct them." In other words, it leaves what you cose to do and how you chose to do up to you. The other interesting thing I've been told about ISO14000 is that it has eliminated some of the ponderous and useless beuraucratic mumbo-jumbo that made achieving ISO900 compliance such a pain in the keister. Of coures, I said less mumbo-jumbo, not none. Good question, thanks!!
