My company is trying to develop a system to take into account the SMT parts scrapped by the machine and also the parts lost during loading and unloading feeders. This is causing part shortages for us. I would appreciate if anyone could share how they are handling this issue.

We issue extra parts like this: 8/2 caps and resis. - 40 over 8/4 caps and resis. - 20 over 8/4 IC's - 7 over 12mm - 7 over larger feeders + stick + matrix = the correct # req'd.

These #'s were based on our first SMT lines (used equip.) and we made a few adjustments until trips back to warehouse for more parts at end of build were minimized. We now have all brand new equip. and this overage is a bit overkill but it works very well for us. We might be scrapping $50 worth of parts per job but the equip. can run full speed until the end most of the time & our warehouse people can build new kits and ship product instead of getting parts for SMT to finish builds. We also use tape leaders as a consumable.

Search on Attrition, I think most companies start around 2% across the board. I have adjusted mine higher for 0603, and parts where I experience tape issues constantly. We are running parts with date codes back 2006,2008.

While you're waiting for others to reply, search the fine SMTnet Archives to find threads like: http://www.smtnet.com/Forums/Index.cfm?CFApp=1&Message_ID=43910
