LED Pick up Issues during Feeder Feeding | 13 March, 2013

Hi All,

Need your advice / help. We have assembleon pick-and-place machines and we got some pick-up issues on certain LED's that are Dome Type. The LED's get off from the tape pocket during feeding due to the dome of the LED sticks on the tape surface during feeding and thus inverts or jump out of the pocket.

a) Is there a way to neutralize the stickiness of the tape surface that is facing the LED Dome?

For those who encountered the same problem, what have you done to fix the issues so far?

thanks and best regards

On an Essemtec machine I solved my sticky tape problem by routing the cover tape different than normal so that it pulls back more instead of up. I'm not familiar with your feeders and don't know if that is even a possibility.

This problem has become a real issue with the tacky silicon used in many LEDs. Cree has recomended that the pull off angle be changed for the cover film as mentioned by the previous commentor. With these new silicon LEDs they are recomending teflon or other soft materials for the nozzles. Trying to pick up one LED that is sideways or upside down wrecks a nozzle. It can get expensive fast, if the feeder issue is not resolved. I am thinking a 10 to 15 degree angle would be ideal for the "pull off angle".
