What are some useful applications of the typical xray equipment that people purchase to inspect BGA, beyond the original intent?

You can use your x-ray inspection system to QC incoming multi-layer printed circuit boards. In particular you would want to insure drilling registration. A drilled, plated through hole, precipitously close to a ground plane can have , in time, copper migration and eventual shorting.

We don't currently use BGA's on any of our products. Are there other worthwhile reasons to use x-ray that would benefit enough from it to justify it economically?

Also, I have heard that to put it inline can cause bottlenecks.

The multi-layer printed circuit board manufacturers have been using x-ray inspection for many years to quality control drilling and lamination of multi-layers. Assemblers should consider using x-ray for incoming quality control from their multi-layer suppliers. Inspection guidelines can be povided to you by contacting Glenbrook.

While not quite on the level of rocket science [or entering into the purchase equation], we use xray to incoming inspect tubes of components to check that all the components are oriented head to tail.

I worked as a tech for a company that produced momagraphy equipment about 5 years ago. Every so often we had a problem with a board that was suspected to be the board material itself and used the mamography equipment to check this. In some cases it worked quite well. I always wondered if we were possibly damaging any components by doing this. I don't remember our exact procedure other then varying the exposure time until we got a clear image.

I would think xray would be a big help as long as nothing is damaged.
