For systems that are designed to contact my components, are there potential pitfalls, and what testing has been done to prove these systems?

There are several things to look for in a compliant tooling system

1. How much force per pin is required to lock the pins in place? This is especially important since you will be multiplying by the total number of pins on all modules.

2. Is there compliance built into the pin caps if a pin happens to fall on (for example) QFP leads?

3. How easy is it to change over between products, and how easy is it to set up? Do I need to put my hands in the machine?

4. Can I lower individual pins if needed?

5. Are there special procedures or fixtures required?

6. What is the feedback from trials and from customers

The testing that Ovation has done includes the following: 1. Pin force to lock at setup: 5 grams 2. Special compliant rubber caps to protect components 3. Setup is two seconds plus any time to move/remove modules. Once correct number of modules are in machine, the operator simply pushes a button outside of the machine 4. Pins may be individually lowered if necessary 5. No special fixtures are required 6. Feedback from engineers has been excellent. We have been able to slash setup time and reduce costs, while improving quality. The feedback from operators is that the system makes that machines much easier to set-up and use.
