Noisy LCD monitors on GSM1 | 19 November, 2015

We just powered up a used GSM1 for the first time and it seems to boot and initalize ok. It is running UPS 3.2.2c. The first thing we noticed upon initial power up is that there is a lot of 'noise' on the monitors. Is this normal due to being designed for CRT? Would it possibly help to power from external AC line instead of machine's supply or are there filters available? Thanks for any advice.

What kind of vision system does your machine have? If it is AIS3500AX, that can be the cause. AC supply is hardly the reason...

Hi Deni- Thanks for the reply. I'll try to figure out what vision system is on it. I know it has two 5.3mil cameras front and back, UPS 3.2.2c os/2. Where do I determine the type of vision system; in the computer or harware spec plate?

It is written on power-up screen after booting USOS (green letters). I am attaching image of mine, but with newer VME630 vision. If yours shows AIS3500 there, it is probably a problem with video DAC inside that box (located on the machine rear end, above fuse box).

A shot of the screen is attached showing the version information.

Where do I find the filters? It looks like the power goes from the switch to the large power distribution box which I presume has the back-up batteries inside.

What method is recommended for checking the filters?

This looks like faulty VGA card (the one from which VGA cables come out) in the VME rack. They are notorius and fail often. Sometimes you can replace VRAM chips and fix it...

Which card in the VME should I be suspect of? Mine has several modules including EXM-13A, EXM-14 and EXM-9. I found some EXM-13A boards cheap but the EXM-14 is tough to find at a sane price. Am I looking in the right spot? Thank you!

Swapped the EXM-13A with no change; going to try the EXM-14 card next. Do the monitors split from one VGA port via a cable splitter? I'm still working on getting manuals for this machine so I'm learning as I go so far, thanks for the help.

Resolved.

Thanks to some information provided by the fine folks over at Capital Equipment Exchange I was able to update the system to a EXP-VID-B video card, replacing the EXM-13A and EXM-14 combination. This update eliminates the jumper cable between the two cards, and eliminates the splitting of the VGA signal through the power distribution board since the EXP-VID-B card has two VGA ports. (I think this split was where the noise was introduced.) When powered back up and configured properly, the monitors look great!

Going through this update definitely familiarized me quite a bit with the VME and machine construction so I feel more confident with it now.
