Trying to place PTH components with an SMT machine is possible but maybe not plausible. Would you have to buy specialized tools and equipment for the job ( gripper nozzles ). Are the machines you have capable. i.e.. Would you need camera modifications, raised Gantry. The process depends on what your part's dimensions are and weather or not your machines can properly inspect them. Are they able to read the pins on a PTH component. Simply outlining the component will not be accurate enough as the parts get bigger, gain more leads, and reduce pitch. How they are picked up by the machine should not cause a problem. Some things you would want to look at before making a decision: Maximum length and width of component your machine can inspect. Maximum height. Machine vision capabilities, ( pin inspection ). If your machine can inspect the pins, what will happen when the bottom of the components are white. Can your machines differentiate between component and leads.
This is just a few things you might want to look at, then again... Have FUN
