Crystal on a PCB brakes under vibration | 28 November, 2018

Hello all,

I have a crystal that breaks in spinning test with several G. I need to secure this part and I am wondering what kind of solution you might have. I was thinking some silicone coating that can be dispensed.Or do you think an underfill might solve this issue? The PCB is a high runner, so I would need fast process. Regards, Emil

I think silicone mask is ok, This is so that after soldering, you can use these holes to fit other components later. This peelable layer is needed, unless you want to solder each component manually--From ALLPCB

is it vibration or pcb bends under G force? what angle is this force?

You may want to look at a product called place & bond underfilm. It is essentially a SMD tape and reel placed pad that acts like underfill when going through reflow. I got some samples from an APP tech day and had a play and it bonds very well.

You place the pad (or pads) first, then the component on top.

Robl,

I like this underfilm. Do you think you should place it in the middle of the part? I am curious if they provided some advice to you as how to use it.

Hi Evtimov,

For BGA's you place 4 on each side right outside the edge balls and it pulls the case down and a bit is pulled between the balls on reflow.

Not tried gluing a crystal (they only gave me a strip to play with)

Thanks Rob,

in my case I will probably have it in the middle under the part and see if it really helps with the vibration. My other option is to use underfill and see how that works...just not sure how good it will flow under as the part is close to the PCB
