Axial VCD Sequecer 5 Clinch Issue (NEED HELP) | 28 November, 2018

Hello, so basically I've been having trouble with parts popping up as they are being inserted into the PCB. It happens at random and I've gone through multiple rebuilds and tons of adjustments and still cant get a clean run. I've tried raising the cutters above the bushings, below the bushings, changing the span, increasing and decreasing the backstroke, replaced the tooling, etc. Still no change. I'm at a loss of what to do next. If I could get any tips on adjustments and settings and maybe a solution to the problem that'd be awesome! Any helpful links or documents would be great too! Thank you!

If you have a Universal machine, try southwestautomationconsultants.com. He is located in Arizona, but is good about phone and e-mail support. Dan has helped me with my 25 year old axial.

Can you reproduce this in step mode? When exactly does it happen? During the cut step?

What I'm thinking is that your cutter/former (or whatever the "boot" shaped assembly is called, that provides the dies for cutting and forming parts from the tape) could be worn, dull, bent, etc., and once in a while you get a lead that doesn't enter the clinch properly when it lifts.

We also had worn continuity tubes on an old (version 3, I think) VCD clinch that caused a similar problem, but I can't remember if the 5 uses the same design.

Thank you for responding, we replaced those parts and it happens in step mode too, it happens as soon as it reaches the pcb before the cut and clinch process.

If the part is kicking up on one side or the other make sure you've done the following:

Replaced the inside formers, shoulder screws, shear block and o rings. It sounds like you have the clinch covered. Also check the driver tips. If they are smooth at the point they contact the component the part will slip and won't be inserted properly into the board.

Is this across different assemblies or components? HAS the machine been calibrated lately? Are you using an adjustable fixture or dedicated tooling plate? Is it a rotating table and are you using it? Was program generated with CAD data or self taught? Is finished hole dia to lead dia ratio correct? Is there any slop in the table? Is your anvil height and timing correct?

Just some things to consider.
