Hello everyone, I would like to incorporate comments into our stencils. We have a stencils where it appears as though text has been etched into it. Since no one in our team knows how this was done, I obtained an etching pen (Gimark KBS5006), which is supposed to be suitable for stainless steel according to the description. I've tried the pen on both smooth and rough surfaces, but even after a long waiting period, there is hardly any text visible on the stencil. Do you label stencils afterwards? I would appreciate recommendations, any hints or advice.

The stencil house will etch anything you want onto the stencil. The best way will be to send the stencils back into them.

Label works too, if you want to do it in house.

Thanks for your replies!

I want to label or etch the stencils in house.

What labels do you recommend? They have to withstand the cleaning solution for stencils. Thats why I thought, etching would be the best solution.

I agree with Sr. Tech; simply include any notes you want etched on the stencil and ensure they know you want the note etched on the stencil. If you have a lot of stencils and don't want to ship them back, then maybe a low cost portable laser marker would do the job.

Thanks a lot for your input! Including specific notes on the stencil sounds like a good plan, and I'll make sure to communicate that. If the shipping process becomes cumbersome with multiple stencils, I'll definitely consider the option of a low-cost portable laser marker. Your suggestion is valuable, and I'll keep it in mind. Thanks again!

I think the laser etcher is the way to go. Practice on some obsolete stencils so you can determine the correct settings for the material.

I agree. I'll look into it. Thanks!

You could also try something like a Radian desktop fiber laser as a smaller, low cost alternative to accurately and permanently engrave each stencil frame!

Thank you for your reply!

I think that the cost for a Radian desktop fiber laser is too much for just engraving on stencil frames. But I'll look into it :)

We use a Brady printer BMP21-Plus and M21-500-595-WT 1/2 inch wide labels on our stencils for stencil name and storage rack location. They have survived hundreds of washes through our ultrasonic stencil wash with chemistry. We have never had one fade or come off on the 500 or so stencils we have.

Thank you very much. I indeed got the Brady M211 printer and your "M21-500-595-WT" Labels should be compatible with that. I'll give it a try. :)

What about punching some numbers ? If there is some distance to artwork, it does not affect stencil at all.

I've seen punched markings even on high-end stencils

Also, if you use etching pen, clean the surface first with solvent as grease blocks the etchant. Some rubbing with steel wool should also help.

Thank you for your response!

I think, the labels seem more elegant and offer the flexibility of being reversible if the labeling isn't satisfactory. However, the punch numbers themselves are also a viable solution, so thank you for that suggestion as well!

I've tried cleaning and roughening it with steel wool. It seems I may have the wrong or too weak acid for that, as it did enhance the effect somewhat, but still wasn't satisfactory.
