Older gear MPM Speedline Accela VS. DEK 265 Horizon | 27 January, 2024

Thanks for your input, new to this industry and trying to learn. Which is a better machine for low volume high mix? I have the option to pick which path to start learning on MPM Speedline Accela or a DEK 265 Horizon

Any pros / cons or input is appreciated.

For low volume high mix an EKRA will be much better. Slower but much better on GUI which makes products changes faster. Operators can handle the machine easier and way better in effeciency. EKRA have really simply internal sturcture which makes service work easier and you can calibrate the machine with any or your own PCB.

Which model EKRA would you recommend?

It might be worth mentioning that Speedprint (now Europlacer) printers also have a calibrate using your own board capability. They arguably also target higher mix environments given that is the market the pick and place machine targets.

DEK uses a video mode if you are to use apertures in place of fiducials. Arguably this is a weakness compared to other platforms that use different vision techniques that are less temperamental.

I would also check the support available in your region for the brand today and the models available to you. DEK has a list of the official status of its many models. With older models you are probably reliant on 3rd parties and cannibalism.

I'm in the USA. Yes, we are going to self support or use other old machines to get this going.

Which speedprint / Europlacer would you recommend?

We have 3 of them. E5 (2000), X5 (2006), X4 Proffessional (2012). All of them can handle our requirements, even E5 have the requested accuracy. X5 have disk PCB clamping which really nice for the operators and X4Prof have SPS (3-stage) witch pneumatically removable clamp.

Arguably there is essentially one model the SP700 or 710. If you don't need 29" there is also the discontinued 210.

However I don't think the brand matters all that much. You want what you can find at the right price and you need the options on it that will get you good results. I would look at the board support/clamping your products need and if you want paste inspection on board. Inspection is weaker/slower on a Speedprint.

I've never seen an EKRA in person but the simplicity of built is clear to see if you check some youtube videos. Speedprint also emphasise the fact you could change something yourself fairly easily like a camera and use the built in calibration routines to back running quickly. This is something the other machines might need an engineer or other equipment and knowledge to do. But I really don't think there is a terrible choice to make only perhaps unlucky ones if you manage to pick a dog.

Since you are new to the industry the more important choice is who will support the machine. If you are buying used you will most likely need to "register" the equipment (pay money) to the OEM if you need support. It is most likely that you will need support. It has been many years since I last registered a machine so I don't know what the current trend is but you should check that out before making the choice.

Yes, I have ran into this. They won't even sell you a screw unless you give them money to "register" Trying to start for the lowest cost.

I see the DEK could be harder to learn as a new person. Yes, self calibration would be great! Thanks everyone for this feedback. I really appreciate all of the input!
