DEK APi X Calibration | 20 August, 2024

Our dek APi X started having alignment problems suddenly and we aren't sure why. The board is close, but mainly shifted toward the rear of the machine so we are not able to print with it.

I performed reference alignment which works properly. I then did a vision calibration with the cal stencil and board, but this process doesn't seem to work properly. It goes through all of the motions and displays results, but when I try to do a test alignment with a board the alignment doesn't work anymore- fiducials are not detected. The fiducial box is also no longer a box but just a horizontal line.

Restoring the vision defaults fixes the issue with the box being a horizontal line, but I am unable to calibrate the machine and get the alignment correct.

Am I missing some step that is not in the procedure?

Well it rarely fails that I post here and resolve the problem shortly after.

I noticed the "PelSizeY" value was in the hundreds instead (188) of tenths (0.155) which indicated some issue with Y calibration. This coincided with the alignment issue- off in the Y direction.

Further investigation revealed the y axis motor on the screen alignment system was not moving. The steppers no longer have position feedback on newer models so the machine did not know the stepper was stationary when told to move.

The issue turned out to be one of the motor connector pins pushed back in the harness breaking one of the four wire connections.

Restoring the connection allowed the calibration process to complete properly.

That's a good find and a bit surprising. I've found that our DEK has some fairly decent range limits on input size for most of the options.
