Top & bottom zones Diffuser plate & mesh Rust observed in one of Reflow oven that we have. Its 7 Zone Reflow oven of around 7 years old Machine. Requesting experts opinion to understand the feasible root causes.

Who makes the oven? Possible flux vapor corrosion damage most likely.

Thanks for the response Charliem. Moisture in compressed air lines - very remote chances since the same air is being used for PCB drying process after cleaning. Compressor is built with several filter stages.

Stainless steel usually does not rust. Therefore it is probably not stainless steel. The heat of the oven isn't helping anything.

I think root cause is being cheap and not buying quality equipment.

Hello Stephen, thanks for the feedback. You mean, all the Diffuser plate & mesh are supposed to be stainless steel & will not get rusted even with moisture in compressed air lines or with flux vapor etc as suspected by other experts in this thread?

They should be stainless. Accumulating flux can rust out steel and even the cheaper stainless. You can do a quick test to see if it's magnetic metal. If it is, its a cheaper stainless or just regular steel.

Hello Mistr Thou, thanks for the suggestion. We will do the magnetic test. COLD REDUCED CARBON STEEL is the material is one of the part which got rusted as confirmed by lab test. Other accessories are under laboratory test as of moment. Is COLD REDUCED CARBON STEEL is prone to get rust? Is this material acceptable for Reflow Oven?

Suitable materials used all comes down to the cost point of the equipment. It's cheaper as it's made cheaper even if not suitable.

A lot of Chinese kit these days should be treated as disposable kit. No such issues with the higher end equipment.

You get what you pay for at the end of the day.

Noticed you stated that the incoming compressed air is filtered, but does the compressor have a drier unit? should be CDA air at a min.

Also the shop floor environment - is this also controlled or is it more to moisture in the air etc

Cleaning maintenance? is it not just a build up of flux over time which is eating into the materials in question?

Hello Carl, Thanks a lot for the valuable points. We do have an AHU and ambient is controlled. And compressor is having drier as well.

Just a thought, is it water cooled? unlikely but depending on the oven & process its worth asking.

I have a few ovens which are water cooled.

Have you confirmed for sure it is rust?

Hello Carl, thanks again for the time given to my query. Its not water cooled and rust is confirmed. Few pictures are attached. Even we have many more pictures.
