RJ45 connector selective soldering | 15 August, 2025

Hello professionals!

I am quite new to selective soldering and i have been trying to get rid of solder bridges when soldering RJ45 connector.

Seems like i got to point where 1/3 of soldered connectors doesn't have any bridges but other 2/3 have.

Our company has Ersa Versaflow 3 selective soldering system. I have now tried with different size of nozzles, from small nozzle to big 18/20 nozzle (only like dipping whole connector at once) but seems like i cannot get better results.

I have also tried different soldering times and preheating temperatures. I have also added flux etc. But seems like nothing helps...

What to try next? Does anyone here have solved problem like that and could have some parameters what to try to get rid of solder bridges?

Thank you. :)

There are a ton of variables with select solder results. Would you be able to take a picture of an unsoldered and soldered connector, and the prepped nozzle? I've maintained Ersa Ecoselect machines and they don't operate much differently. Most bridging I see is due to nozzle moving too fast and dragging across multiple leads; or misalignment on calibration. How are your results with other boards?

Thanks for answer!

Yes there is definetly ton of variables. I havent yet tried "harder" solder than that RJ45, so cant say about other boards. Otherwise soldering is good.

Now i have tried to solder it with big nozzle and only like dipped whole connector, not moving nozzle on x/y direction at all.

I try to take couple pictures, but if someone has basic parameters for soldering which has been worked on that kind of connectors, i would like to see those. Thats where i could see am i wrong in some basic settings. Like pot temperature, soldering time, preheating temp etc..

Watch selective soldering machine videos from the manufacturer on youtube to get a sense of how the machine should be operated. Note nozzle selection and process speeds.

If you have a manual for the machine, see if it has information that can help in terms of tips.
