Is the no clean solder paste as good? We are wondering if we can elliminate the wash when we change from through hole to surface mount.

No clean is as good as your process, and the paste you are using. Everything I do is no clean and I have very little problem's. Ok you need to pay real close attention to your profiles and to your flux in wave solder ( yep no clean there too). Get in toe with a solderpaste supplier that is going to help you set thing's up nice at the start then keep the dicipline. There are some great no clean pastes and there are some,,,er um...not so great ones..so be fussy and ste up your trial's right really make the paste manufacturer work for your business.

Welcome to the fun stuff!

We too have very few problems with cosmetics, reliability or ATE. And John W is correct in saying that your success or failure will be with your choise of materials and your process. The good suppliers are going to jump in, evaluate your needs, recommend a suitable product and help you get it going. The bad ones will send you a sample of whatever you ask for and you will never hear from them again. Go figure! We have the luxury (?) of being an OEM captive shop and we get to decide on the best processes to use. Your customer may not allow that flexibility. Good luck John Thorup
