My question is: Pls kindly advise what is the meant by a "Think Film hybrid design" and what are the advantages it would have on surface mount passive components e.g. capacitors and reisitors??

Thanks for your respond. Elaine

Hybrid is as its name implies. It is a combination of printed circuitry and semi-conductor or other lithographic technology. It is printed.

Hybrid thick film technology uses ceramic (typically alumina or aluminum oxide) substrates. Upon them is printed various circuitry and components.

Alumina, and other ceramics, are very delicate as they are brittle. Often, they are but 20 mils thick and no more than one or two inches square.

Circuitry consists of designs often produced by CAD or rubylith at about 20:1 with photo reductions made to enhance resolution and accuracy. Often, resistor pastes are screened to provide other circuit requirements.

To make multilayer circuitry, the gold circuit traces are coated with a glass frit and co-fired as often as needed and practible.

Through hole requirements are met using laser "drilling" processes. This is accompanied with through hole metallization and/or pin insertions.

Resistors are trimed using air or laser abrading techniques. This provides the values specified.

Because of costs and delicacy of substrates, hybrids are best suited as a go between the above mentioned PCB or semiconductor technology. Often, hybrid circuitry is encapsulated and used as componentry mounted on PCB's as resistor networks or?

Capacitors often are composed using hybrid technology. Combined with resistor material composites, they are useful as resistor/capacitor (R/C) networks.

And on it goes.
