Does anyone know of an AOI system that can look at the solder joints of SMT chip devices (1206,0805 & 0603) and make a reliable presence/abscence call of the joint on a HASL PCB. A low false call rate (much less than 1%)is required. Any info. from users that have firsthand experience with AOI would be highly appreciated.

We use them on not only discretes, but also to check the solder quality of active devices including fine pitch, SOICs, J-leads (the camera tilts 10 deg) etc... The upfront work building the library can be time-intensive but once past that, we have found it very reliable. It uses 3 lamps- Red, Green and Blue- to discern the contours of the solder. Once you tell it what a good joint is, it does the rest. You can set the sensitivity (and many other parameters) however you'd like. It will also inspect for bridging, solder balls, etc.... When the inspection is complete, it provides a printout with a listing of the errors it found along with a map of the board which hi-lites the locations of the errors. The printout follows the board to a human inspector who then checks the callouts. A typical program here- inspecting all part types (1-2000 parts, sometimes more including qfp304s, etc...) takes 5-6 minutes, depending on the component mix. A board as you describe (2000 parts- all caps/res) would take about 1-2 minutes. There is also selectable camera resolution if you need it.
