Is there any software to design the stencil openings? It may be including automatic modify the aperture, monitoring aspect ratio and area ratio, even let you know the whole vloume of the opening and average ratio?because the stencil design is more important along with the extra high density pcba assembly.mobil phone's stencil design is a challenge.

Hmmm... Why would you want to to this? I understand your concern, but why not let your stencil house manipulate your Gerber and send you a copy of it before they cut a stencil? Saves you time and money. Sit down with your stencil manufacturer and let them know what you expect from them. A little work up fron goes a long way.

Not now, Valor may under develop the module for its Trilogy 5000 with the stencil aperture based on the rules which you set.

Also, check with IRI stencil (Alpha), they have a s/w and based on using ODB++ file and not Gerber.

hussman, hi,

mebbe we get the stencil fab house guys who spend more time in the workshop making more stencils = more revenue, whereas your stencil fab house is more learned and refined?

we make it a point to use an inhouse MS-Excel format to key in the major (LxBxH) = paste volume*(paste release coefficient)) as part of stencil design verification control. this is sometimes the Gerber data used by stencil fab house may have physical variants of the PCB bareboard. dun ask us why this is so, coz the gerber and PCB was consignment project materials to us. anyway the customer viewed stencil to be our business to verify irregardless of what caused the stencil fab error? (ie. gerber vs PCB).

So its always good practice to verify EVERYTHING. like ex-president of the USA, Mr Regean, said before in the peak of the cold war "trust but verify", amen...

besides, alot of ground work, goes a long long long way.

Yes,stencil supplier can give me some suggestion.but all need to be verified again and again.if there is such software can tell us everything about the stencil design? verify if before it be made.I do think it will save time to launch NPI and save time to mass production and improve the yield.more important is that it helps engineer and manager accumulate the process knowledge.

which stencil vendor can deliver aspect ratio and area ratio and the statistical information to the user? It's difficult if the pad is modified.

and the two ratio is changed if you use different thickness sheet or step-down or step-up.I think real time calculator of the two ratio is very important for tranfer efficience.

Boy, I step out for a bit and everybody picks on me (just joking). I believe I may have been off base a bit. Checking every bit of your stencil design is very good - I do that too. I calculate LXWXH and reduce or over print where needed, depending on the thickness of stencil I need. As for software that could do this, I am not aware of any. I use CAM 350 to read Gerber, then make my own calculations based on component pitch, past experience with my paste, oven profiles, board house and type of process. I have the stencil cut to my specs, then run a proto. I use a Hi-Scope magnification machine to inspect solder joints. Granted it's not an exact science, but does work. The real fun comes when the board gets subjected to 10 Gs worth of shaking. I've seen thru-hole parts get ripped apart, leaving only their leads behind. Not a pretty sight.

There are a variety of machines that can calculate your solder paste deposits AFTER screen printing. Some screen printers even come with 3 dimensional laser reading. I find this information very useful as well.

Hope this clears my name, but feel free to rip on me anytime!

Piece of cake,

our sencil design software not only automaticaly mods the data for all component pitches but can apply anti solder ball designs ( homebase, form4 vnotch etc). As an added bonus it warns when the side wall to surface area ratio exceeds 1.5 :1 to alert our designers of paste transfer problems - pretty cool huh! Unfortunately its propriatory and not for sale but if anyone needs a favour ( or a stencil )let me know. Fraser

I'm new to the smt game. I'm trying to learn the basics of stencil design. I've just been tasked with removing and replacing a couple of mictor connectors. I need to find/design stencils for the solder paste. These boards are proprietary, and we don't have the artwork. But AMP has provided the component dimensions and"recommended" artwork in pdf format. Where should i start?

Go one to one at 7mils for these connectors. Generally your stencil shop will do this for you. Somebody has the artwork since a stencil was made for it at sometime?
